Acne Medication
There are a number of different acne medications to choose from on the market today. Some can be bought at your local drugstore, while others require a prescription. It's usually best to try the many over-the-counter medications first. There are many good products that are relatively inexpensive and can cure most acne problems.
Over-the-counter acne medications:
- Benzoyl Peroxide bp gel
(Clearasil, Oxy-10, Fostex, Clear by Design, Persa-Gel, Neutrogena On-the-Spot). Kills acne causing bacteria. Benzoyl Peroxide also provides a mild drying and peeling effect which aids in preventing breakouts.
- Salicylic Acid
(Stri-dex, Clearasil Clearstick, Oxy Night Watch) Helps slow down shedding of cells inside the hair follicle which prevents clogging.
- Resorcinol (Clearasil Adult Care)
Helps break down rough, hard skin, including blackheads and whiteheads.
Prescription medications:
- Adapalene (Differin)
Helps prevent dead skin from accumulating inside the follicle that clog pores.
- Azelaic Acid (Azelex)
Helps skin renew itself more quickly reduce buildup of dead skins cells that clog pores.
- Benzoyl Peroxide (Benzac AC, Brevoxyl, Triaz)
Kills acne causing bacteria. Benzoyl Peroxide also provides a mild drying and peeling effect which aids in preventing breakouts.
