Acne Scar Removal

acne scar removal

Acne scar removal can require a large investment of time and money, however the results can be dramatic. There are usually two major stages used in acne scar removal. First, the various surgical procedures are used to correct large scarring areas. Then, a resurfacing procedure is used to smooth out the corrective surgery.

Dermal Fillers
These fillers are injections that raise the surface of the skin to appear more smooth. Further injections are required since this procedure does not permanently correct acne scars.

Punch Excision
A small tool is use to excise the scare and suture the walls together forming a new, smoother scar. This procedure is used on icepick and deep boxcar scars. After the treatment, scars are now available for resurfacing.

Punch Excision with Skin Graft Replacement
The scar tissue is excised as described above, but instead of suturing the walls together, a skin graft from behind the ear is used to cover the scar. This allows for faster resurfacing techniques.

Punch Elevation
The scar tissue is excised as described above, then the excised portion is elevated to the surface and sutured into place. This allows for less color difference as with a skin graft, and lessens the risk of producing a new visible scar.

Subcutaneous Incision
Under local anesthesia, a specially beveled needle is inserted under the skin between the dermis and the subcutaneous tissue. The bands that bind the dermis to the scar tissue are cut which will flatten rolling scars. Bruising and some bleeding can occur which will fade after one week.

Laser Resurfacing
Laser resurfacing is the most popular for most acne problems. The most common lasers are the carbon dioxide (CO2) and erbium: YAG (Er: YAG) lasers. The lasers burn the top layer of the skin to a precise depth, thus healing over with new skin. Closely monitored post-operative care is essential for this procedure's success.
