Birth Control and Acne
Birth control and acne are a concern for any woman. Pregnancy acne is common, and steps to treat it are continually being developed. The main drug used to prevent acne is Ortho Tri-Cyclen. This is currently the only oral medication approved by the FDA to treat acne in women. The pill is designed to prevent future outbreaks, not treat existing inflammations. Therefore, it takes 6 to 8 weeks before any results can be seen.
Acne birth control works by lowering the level of androgen hormones that stimulate oil production in the skin. In clinical studies, Ortho Tri-Cyclen showed results similar to topical antibiotics and benzoyl peroxide.
Ortho Tri-Cyclen claims to solve two issues: pregnancy and acne. However, the results are not that simple. There are several side effects to consider.
Major side effects of birth control pills:
- increased chances of breast cancer
- disturbances to blood sugar
Minor side effects of birth control pills:
- lowered immune functioning
- facial and body hair growth
Despite these side effects, a large percentage of women continue to use Ortho Tri-Cylcen with positive results in treating both pregnancy and acne.
