Hormonal Acne
Hormonal acne is simply acne caused by an overproduction of various hormones in your body. Your hormones regulate everything from sleep cycles, to growth cycles, to muscle growth, to fat regulation, and of course oil production in the skin. When these hormone levels become unbalanced, the result can manifest itself in many ways, one of which is acne.
Your skin's oil production is also a function regulated by hormones. When hormones become unbalanced, oil can be produced in excess, which clogs the pores, which in turn become infected resulting in a pimple.
So, how can hormones remain in balance?
Sometimes, at various stages of life, hormone production will increase no matter what is done (adolescence, pregnancy, etc.). But during other life stages, hormonal acne can be regulated.
Antiandrogen (spironolactone or flutamide)
- Spironolactone and flutamide function by blocking the effects of testosterone on the oil glands and hair follicle.
Spironolactone is given in low doses of 50 mg to 100 mg daily. Dosages need to be individualized, and results can be expected in 1 to 3 months (avoid spironolactone during pregnancy as the male fetus may show signs of feminine characteristics).
Oral contraceptives are also used to maintain hormonal balance for an acne problem. Often, simply regulating the menstrual cycle by oral contraceptives are enough to reduce acne.
