Teenage Acne
Teenage acne is one of the most pressing issues facing teens across the globe today. Approximately 85% of teenagers, from 12 years old and up, develop acne. That's almost 17 million people in the US alone.
The cause of teenage acne:
The body begins to produce hormones called androgens during the onset of puberty (boys tend to produce more androgens than girls). Androgens cause extra oil production, and this, mixed with dead skin cells clogging the pores, creates acne. While acne has not been proven to be linked in anyway to chocolate or greasy food, some people have noticed that a reduction in these items results in clearer skin.
To keep teenage acne at bay:
- Wash your skin twice daily, especially after exercise and right before bed.
- Use a mild soap and avoid products with a high alcohol content.
- Keep you hair clean. Greasy hair rubbing on the skin can increase the likelihood of clogged pores.
- Do not pick or squeeze the pimples. This can increase the likelihood of infection as well as scarring.
- Try various over-the-counter topical creams to see what works best for you (something with Benzoyl Peroxide is the most common and effective ingredient).
If these simple steps do not result in treating your acne problem, consult a dermatologist to see if there are alternative methods for your particular issue.
