Types of Acne
The most common type of acne is known as Acne Vulgaris: the presence of blackheads, whiteheads, papules and pustules. Aside from this most common type of acne, there are four other, more severe types of acne to consider.
- Acne Conglobata
This is a chronic and severe form of acne vulgaris characterized by inflammation, severe skin damage, deep abscesses, widespread blackheads and scarring.
- Acne Fulminans
This is the sudden onset of severe inflammation. It appears suddenly and is characterized by fever, ulcerating acne, aching, and inflammation of joints (especially hips and knees).
- Nodulocystic Acne
This type of acne is characterized by cysts which can be as large as several centimeters. These cysts may occur singly or be widespread over the face, neck, scalp, back, chest and shoulders.
- Gram-negative folliculitis
An inflammation of follicles caused by a bacterial infection which can result from long-term antibiotic treatments.
Treatments of these more severe forms of acne vary from medication to acne laser treatment. Each should be properly classified by a dermatologist in order to receive the most effective and safest acne treatment available.
