Body Acne
Body acne is common amongst teens and adults alike. This form of acne usually forms on the chest, back and buttocks. Similar to facial acne, body acne results from hormonal imbalance, stress, and genetic factors, however, acne lesions on the body can result from other factors as well.
Tight-fitting clothes mixed with perspiration are common causes. Physically active women are especially prone to body acne because of tight-fitting clothing such as spandex. The clothing traps perspiration against the skin which mixes with surface oils. This film clogs pores and results in body acne.
Body acne treatments are similar to those used for facial acne. However, body acne is often more difficult to treat because it is more difficult to reach. Body acne is also generally found on tougher body skin which is constantly creating friction with clothing.
Body acne treatment should involve regular washing with a salicylic-acid-based cleanser. Follow up by wiping the infected area with a benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid pad, followed by an alpha hydroxy acid-based body moisturizer. For more stubborn body acne, try Retin-A or oral antibiotics such as tetracycline or minocycline.
